Senior Chemist (Formulation Process)

PURPOSE OF JOB.
To provide process development and industrialisation expertise for cosmetics formulations within toiletry & fragrance category, especially detergents, emulsions and alcohol based products. Assist manufacturing sites with the start up of new formulations and technologies and provide troubleshooting expertise to resolve non conformances and manufacturing issues
DUTIES
KEY RESULTS AREAS
Raw Materials
Develop an understanding of cosmetic ingredients and actives their function and behaviour in formulations, critical processing parameters and impact on product stability.
Procedures / Equipment
Investigate develop and implement the correct process development procedures and protocols for different technology formulations. Highlight the need for specific equipment / procedures and make recommendations for purchase and implementation
Work close with the Formulation chemists on formulation processes in Laboratory / Pilot plant and factories to guarantee a good DFM process.
Pilot Scale
Perform pilot batches of in-house developed formulations in line with NPD schedule and in collaboration with the Formulation Chemist, both parties having joint ownership and responsibility for results and subsequent actions.
Liaise with stability, microbiology and packaging testing to ensure the formulations are tested according to correct protocols, review results and make recommendations
Investigate and resolve any non - conformances
Manufacturing Documentation
Prepare manufacturing documentation for new products and issue to production sites (manufacturing instruction, bulk specification, bulk standard samples, raw material specifications and filling parameters)
Production Start up
Provide technical support to bulk production start up and validation of manufacturing of methods, colour matching, testing and approval of test batches and production trial.
Assist the manufacturing sites with troubleshooting production issues and non conformances
Deliver reports with agreed actions, improvements and conclusions shared between Research & Development and the Manufacturer
Technology Expertise
Further develop the Research & Development knowledge of scale up and manufacturing Toiletry & Fragrance Category technologies
THE CANDIDATE -
QUALIFICATIONS
Degree level in Relevant Science Discipline and at least 3 years experience working in the Cosmetic industry ideally on emulsion & detergent based technologies in QA, manufacturing or formulation developments areas.
