The senior is responsible for the conduct of the engagement in the field, and normally works with team members at the client's premises or in the office and participates in the detailed work to the extent appropriate under the supervision of the partner, manager or experienced senior as appropriate.

The specific responsibilities of the senior normally include:

* help develop the overall work plan;

* prepare the planning papers and budgets and, with the manager, control costs;

* ensure that all letters of confirmation have been sent at an appropriate stage;

* allocate tasks to the staff and direct the day-to-day performance of the plan;

* supervise the work of staff, ensuring that they understand the objectives and implications of the work they are doing and that they adequately document their work;

* review the work-papers prepared by the staff and follow up unresolved questions raised or pending matters, or determine that appropriate review has been carried out by another suitable individual;

* ensure that the work-papers prepared by the staff properly support the objectives;

* identify accounting and auditing problems and discuss these with the manager;

* ensure that review notes (relating to work done by, or under the supervision of, the senior) and all other outstanding items are satisfactorily cleared;

* indicate overall satisfaction with the adequacy of the work-papers to support the report to be issued;

* review the financial statements and draft the audit or accountant's report;

* draft the management letter (if appropriate);

* be alert to, and report to the manager, specific aspects of service which may be beneficial to the client;

* inform the manager of the requirements for staff, including specialists;

* attend to the procedures for the completion and issue of the accounts.
